Since being elected as the Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio GRC, Ms Jasmin Lau has walked the ground steadily and sincerely, block by block, neighbourhood by neighbourhood, across Seletar-Serangoon. In her words, “I’ve met many of our residents and every visit has been meaningful.”
These moments have been more than just house visits; they’ve been reunions, unexpected connections, and heartfelt exchanges. “I met a resident whose husband was a long-time volunteer, and her daughter used to work with me. Another told me her granddaughter’s piano teacher is Ms Awyong, my own piano teacher from almost 30 years ago!” Ms Lau shared with a smile. “One of the most moving moments was when a 90-year-old resident gave me a tight hug. It was the end of a long day, and it meant the world to me.”
Her deep desire is to be more than just a familiar face. “I hope that when residents think of me, they’ll describe me as approachable, capable, and sincere. That’s the kind of MP, and person I strive to be.”
As Vice Chairwoman of the Ang Mo Kio Town Council, Ms Lau is focused on the practical issues that matter most to residents. Some of the more persistent challenges such as rodent sightings, internal water seepage, and cleanliness have her full attention.
“We’ve identified rodent hotspots and are working closely with the Ang Mo Kio Town Council to roll out targeted measures,” she explained.
Residents are encouraged to dispose of food waste properly and stallholders are advised to maintain proper housekeeping and cleanliness. Collective action is key to keeping our environment clean and pest-free.
Ms Lau believes that good town management starts with good governance. “As Vice Chairwoman, my role is to ensure that we not only resolve issues but that we uphold strong corporate governance and build trust. Residents must know that we are here to help, and that we follow through.”
Ms Lau is also passionate about strengthening community health. “I hope to bring more health facilities and services into our neighbourhoods,” she said. “Our residents shouldn’t have to travel far for basic care or health screening. I want to make that support more accessible, right where we live.”
This push for healthier living stems in part from her own experience as a mother. “Being a mum has taught me so much about patience, resilience, and the importance of time,” she shared. “I try my best to carve out time for my boys, even on the busiest days. They keep me grounded.”
Ms Lau often brings her sons to community events. “They participate in the games and activities, and they see first-hand what community spirit looks like. It’s my hope that they grow up understanding the value of service and compassion.”
Ms Lau believes in leading by listening. “The issues might not always make the headlines, like faulty water pipes or pest issues, but they affect daily lives. These are the things I want to help fix. And I’ll keep walking the ground, listening to feedback, and being here when people need me.”
As Seletar-Serangoon continues to grow and evolve, Ms Lau’s hopes remain clear: to serve with heart, act with purpose, and build a Town Council that residents can trust and rely on.
