Building Cleaner Neighbourhoods, One Step at a Time

Over the past six months, Ang Mo Kio Town Council (AMKTC) staff have been making a meaningful difference—one piece of litter at a time.

Since November 2024, AMKTC’s seven divisions’ property teams, namely Ang Mo Kio-Hougang, Cheng San-Seletar, Fernvale, Jalan Kayu, Kebun Baru, Yio Chu Kang and Teck Ghee have been organising monthly litter-picking activities every last Friday of the month, from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. These sessions, led by AMKTC’s General Manager/Secretary Mr Ho Juan San, brought together 30 to 40 AMKTC Team Members each time, all committed to helping keep our shared spaces clean and beautiful.

At the close of this initiative in April 2025, a total of 138 kilograms of litter had been picked across Ang Mo Kio GRC, Kebun Baru SMC and Yio Chu Kang SMC.

Beyond numbers, these sessions nurtured friendships and teamwork among AMKTC Team Members. After each round of picking, AMKTC Team Members gathered over hearty dinners—whether zi char, McDonald's or pizza—to bond and reflect on the shared mission to keep our neighbourhood clean.

Everyone’s Estate, Everyone’s Responsibility

The spirit behind this monthly effort was clear: cleanliness is a shared responsibility. As AMKTC’s General Manager/Secretary Mr Ho Juan San shared:

“The monthly litter-picking event is a natural extension of our monthly AMKTC Team activities. I wanted a meaningful way for colleagues to contribute to the community while building team spirit. The biggest takeaway is realising just how vital our cleaners' roles are—and how estate inspections and personal responsibility together keep our homes clean.”

“Inspired by the strong participation so far, we hope more residents will join us to make our estate the cleanest in Singapore!”

Moving forward, AMKTC plans to involve not just staff, but also community partners, schools, families, and resident volunteers. Mr Ho added:

He also called on residents, especially the younger generation, to embrace civic responsibility:

“Creating a clean environment is a joint responsibility. If everyone disposes of waste responsibly, we can make a big impact on our homes.”

Stories of Dedication: Voices from Our Volunteers

For many AMKTC Team Members, these activities were more than just a clean-up—they were an opportunity to deepen their connection to the community.

Sandra Choo, Customer Service Officer, who attended all seven sessions, said:

“I wanted to get to know the estates better and support this meaningful cause. It’s also a great bonding experience for us. I feel fulfilled after every session, knowing we are keeping the community clean together.”

“Management of public spaces is essential, just like tree pruning. Litter-picking helps us understand the challenges firsthand. Volunteering alongside my peers made it even more fulfilling.”

Mohamed Hanapiah, Horticulture Officer, shared similar sentiments:

Their reflections remind us that every action, no matter how small, contributes to the larger goal of keeping Ang Mo Kio clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone.

Let’s Keep the Momentum Going!

Our heartfelt thanks to every AMKTC Team Members who participated over the past six months—and to all residents who continue to play their part to keep our estates clean every day. Clean estates are a reflection of our shared pride and responsibility.

Stay tuned for more opportunities to join future litter-picking sessions and community initiatives!
