From Ang Mo Kio to the International Stage: Cake In Action

Every morning, the aroma of freshly baked bread drifts through the streets of Ang Mo Kio. Residents stopping by for their daily treats may not realise that behind these familiar flavours is a global award-winning baker.

What few may know is that behind the bakery’s success is its founder, Joanne Huang, who recently earned international recognition. She was named Confectioner of the Year at the International Union of Bakers and Confectioners Awards 2025.

At 44, she is the first Southeast Asian woman and the first Singaporean to receive this prestigious award, an impressive feat as she faced off competition from top pastry chefs worldwide.

Cake In Action is a family business passed down to the second generation. After marrying into the family, Joanne joined her husband to help manage the bakery. Wanting to ease his workload, she began learning the craft more seriously and even travelled to Taiwan to study cake-making. Supporting the business gradually grew into a genuine passion for baking.

Her journey in baking truly began with her very first customised cake, a 3D fondant birthday cake for a baby’s full-month celebration, made shortly after completing her cake-baking course in Taiwan. Nervous but excited, this experience marked the start of her hands-on involvement in the bakery and sparked a deeper interest in creating cakes for others.

“When the customer saw the cake and said ‘wow’, that moment stayed with me,” she recalled.

Baking for the Neighbourhood

The bakery continues to focus on everyday bakes for neighbourhood customers, with products shaped by local preferences. Its shio pan (salt croissant) has become one of its popular items, while its cakes are known for lighter sweetness and a more refreshing taste.

Looking Ahead

Mrs Huang hopes the international recognition will bring more attention to neighbourhood bakeries. She encourages fellow bakery owners to share skills and experiences, learning from one another.

“By supporting each other, we can all grow together,” she said.
