A Hari Raya Visit to Kampong Lorong Buangkok
In celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, our MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC (Buangkok–Fernvale South), Mr Victor Lye, visited Kampong Lorong Buangkok to spend time with residents and learn more about how Muslim families in the kampong mark this meaningful occasion.
Kampong Lorong Buangkok
Often described as the last remaining traditional kampong on mainland Singapore, Kampong Lorong Buangkok offers a rare glimpse into a way of life that once existed across many parts of the island. Established in 1954, the village is home to a small community of families living in wooden houses surrounded by greenery. With its narrow paths and quiet surroundings, the kampong continues to reflect the spirit of neighbourliness that many residents fondly remember from earlier days.
During the visit, Mr Victor Lye met a Muslim family who has been living in the kampong for about 20 years. They shared that they previously lived in an HDB flat but moved into the kampong after their grandparents passed away. The family chose to continue their family’s connection with the village and the memories it holds.
“One thing we really treasure is that during Hari Raya, our relatives will come back here to the kampong. The whole family gathers and we celebrate together.”

As he walked through the kampong, Mr Victor Lye also spoke with other residents and listened to their stories about life in the village. Residents shared that the kampong environment remains something special, where neighbours greet one another warmly and often stop for a chat along the village paths.
It is common for neighbours to step in and help when someone needs to carry heavy groceries, and residents also look out for one another, alerting the community if anything unusual is spotted. Families from different backgrounds have lived alongside one another here for many years, and during festive seasons such as Hari Raya, neighbours often exchange greetings and share homemade treats. These everyday gestures continue to keep the kampong spirit alive.

赖添发先生于开斋节期间走访甘榜罗弄万国，与当地居民交流，并了解他们的传统习俗。作为新加坡最后一个仍保留的本土甘榜，居民分享了邻里之间如何互相关照，不同背景的邻居从日常生活的帮忙到互相赠送节日食品。一户长期居住的穆斯林家庭也表示，每逢开斋节，亲戚都会回到甘榜，一家人团聚庆祝。

Sebagai kampung di tanah besar terakhir yang masih wujud di Singapura, para penduduk berkongsi bagaimana jiran saling mengambil berat antara satu sama lain, daripada membantu keperluan harian hingga bertukar juadah perayaan merentasi pelbagai latar belakang. Sebuah keluarga Muslim yang telah lama menetap di situ juga berkongsi bahawa setiap kali Hari Raya, ahli keluarga akan pulang ke kampung untuk berkumpul dan meraikan bersama.
