Smart Recycling Boxes (SRBs) were officially launched in Ang Mo Kio. These new bins address common recycling challenges, such as contamination from incorrect items, while making recycling more accessible and convenient for residents.
With every bottle, can or piece of paper recycled using the new SRBs, residents will earn points that can be exchanged for FairPrice vouchers.

The SRB was introduced earlier by MP Yip Hon Weng at Yio Chu Kang. He demonstrated how the SRBs reduce contamination by screening out unsuitable items and also shared plans to expand SRB coverage across all zones, with bin placements selected based on foot traffic to maximise accessibility and usage.
Residents got to try the machines firsthand, and many appreciated the added convenience and gamified incentives. Edward Wijaya, resident of Yio Chu Kang, shared:
“This one is definitely better than the previous…Yeah, I think it’s easy to use. You’ve gamified the whole thing and you can get the vouchers.”
The SRB is simple to use. Sign up for an account, log in at the machine, select your item type, and deposit your recyclables. The machine weighs the items and automatically credits your account with points. The more you recycle, the more you earn.
What sets the SRB apart is its built-in screening system, which flags incorrect items and helps maintain clean recycling streams. Persistent misuse may lead to restricted access, supported by onboard cameras and backend tracking.
Within 1 month of its installation across 37 locations, the SRBs have collected over 8,418 kg of recyclables. Residents have noted how much cleaner and more efficient the system is compared to regular bins.
Another resident, Mr Lee Boon Choon, also shared that the SRBs offers a big improvement in cleanliness and usability.
“看那个蓝色的,全都垃圾堆,都放进去,全都 sayang。所以这个很好,改进了很多。”
(Translation: See the blue bin? It’s filled with rubbish — everything gets thrown in and wasted. This is much better, a big improvement.)
Earlier on 11 July 2025, over 70 students from 3 schools participated in the recycling of items during the SRB launch at Seletar-Serangoon, launched by MP Ms Jasmin Lau.
Many of the children were engaging in recycling outside of school for the first time. Students brought along water bottles, paper bags and boxes to recycle. The experience was lively and hands-on.
Ms Su, Principal of Little Green House at 540 Serangoon North, shared:
“It was very exciting and informative. It is important for preschoolers to understand why we need to save the earth and how their everyday items can be recycled.”
This complements the school’s sustainability curriculum, which teaches children about environmental care through thematic lessons and recycling activities.
“We learnt about planting trees and saving the earth,”
said Francesca, K2 student of Little Green House at 540 Serangoon North Ave 4.
“We will come back to recycle items again!”
her classmate, Tharun, eagerly added.
The Smart Recycling Box initiative supports our national vision of becoming a Zero Waste Nation.
“To complement the national recycling programme of blue bins, 800 Super introduced the Smart Recycling Boxes to provide residents with convenient, 24/7 access to segregated recycling. With the SRBs, we hope to raise awareness and encourage greater public participation in recycling.”
- Mr Milton Ng, Director of 800 Super Holdings Limited
SRB locations are selected based on high traffic flow, making them more accessible. These locations were carefully selected through site recces conducted by AMKTC property officers and 800 Super. The SRBs are emptied daily to maintain cleanliness and ensure they remain ready for regular users.
This initiative is part of Ang Mo Kio Town Council’s broader commitment to sustainability, making recycling easier and worthwhile.
