Tucked in a quiet corner of Ang Mo Kio, Coffee By The Porch is a home-based cafe founded by three friends who met at Singapore Management University. This is a passion project birthed by Jasmin (passionate baker), Winson (coffee enthusiast), and Kaydon who dreamed of turning his home at 8 Jalan Jarak into a hospitality experience and meeting new people.
The result: they completely transformed Kaydon’s porch space into a warm and welcoming spot for neighbours to connect and enjoy a good cup of coffee.
At Coffee By The Porch, every item on the menu reflects the trio’s personality and tastes. Some of their menu items include:
The menu continues to evolve, often guided by food trends and customer feedback.
“We don’t overthink it,” Jasmine shared. “Sometimes it’s just something we want to try, or something a customer suggests. We just roll with it.”
Operating a home cafe from their porch has opened unexpected doors to neighbourly connection. In the short time since their opening, the trio have built genuine bonds with nearby residents. There are the regulars who drop by every weekend without fail to pick up coffee and bakes, the coffee roaster next door who invited them over to share brewing tips, and even strangers who became friends over shared tables.
“One of our favourite memories was when two separate groups were seated at the same table because we were full,” Kaydon recalled. “They ended up chatting for the whole afternoon and even went out for dinner together after. It was so heartwarming to see how a simple coffee space could lead to such connections.”
Balancing university commitments with weekend operations has not been easy. From managing a steady stream of orders to navigating the physical limitations of a home setup, the team has had to adapt quickly.
“The start was challenging,” Winson said. “We were not used to handling large groups, and when everyone came at once, it was overwhelming. But we have learned to streamline things and enjoy the process.”
As the space and concept remains deeply personal to the trio, they are focusing on making each visitor’s experience more unique and personalised, rather than focusing just on business expansion. To that end, they constantly refine their menu and tweak the experience to keep it fresh for regulars who have grown to love the porch-side ritual.
“We see this more as a passion project than a full-scale business,” said Kaydon. “Our priority is to keep the vibe cozy, improve our menu, and continue building a community where people can connect with one another over coffee and bakes.”
Through simple rituals like weekend coffee runs and porch-side conversations, Coffee By The Porch has come to mean more than just food and drinks, it’s a space where neighbours slow down, connect, and recharge.
